Your role in preventing problems

Knowing your consumer rights is key to preventing any potential problems with your purchases or contracts. Here are additional tips that will help you protect your pocketbook:

  • Do business with legitimate companies and individuals.
  • Shop around and compare prices; get multiple written estimates for the services you plan on purchasing.
  • Check online reviews, and references for products, services, businesses.
  • Don’t pay any deposits before you get answers to all of your questions.
  • Never accept verbal agreements – always insist on written contracts.
  • Don’t sign a contract you don’t understand.
  • Always keep your bills of sale, contracts, warranties, instructions, cancelled cheques, etc. You may need these should an issue arise.

If you have an incident to report, file a consumer complaint with Consumer Investigations Unit. All complaints are assessed on a case by case basis to determine an appropriate course of action to address the issue.
